September 27 Spring has sprungAfter our trip away I came home to pick up mum from the airport and we had a week at home. Got lots of jobs done and spent a good few hours washing dirt out of every crack and crevice in Kermit. We all went to Kim's 50th birthday at Ashmore Steakhouse - which was a lovely surprise for her as I had convinced her we would be away for her birthday. Leo and the kids came up from Kiama, Alana was off in Europe, Tracey and Cesare (Chesay) came up from Sydney and Robyn and Alan came along too. It was a good nite and the meals are massive - great place to visit. The day we arrived home I got a call from a friend at work to say my friend Max had come off his motorbike and was in hospital - a quick call to his partner Carol established he was in a pretty bad way but not life threatening. Carol and I were planning to go to Hervey Bay for a few days after mum went home. Well mum and I ended up going to Hervey Bay and it was raining and miserable. Max was in hospital and wouldn't be out for a while. We met up with Cheryl and Ron, Garth was there from Mackay and Diane, Ron's sister and her husband Stan arrived. We had a nice couple of days, I went for a couple of bike rides and then we headed home. Mum flew back to Sydney and I had a week off work. I went to Alan and Robyn's at the Gold Coast for a day to finalise their website www.aknightonthetiles.com.au and then Robyn and I met Kim at Robina for a morning's shopping. Then back to work. Winter this year has been very cold - or we have become acclimatised - in the past years we have only pulled out a light doona for our bed and a cotton blanket - this year it was a polar fleece blanket and our old pure wool quilt from Shellharbour. I had relegated the gas heater to the shed last year in disgust as we rarely used it. How I rue that day as it refused to play this year and kept going out. Garth dropped in for a while and he took to wearing beanies and John's Freightcorp wool jumper he was so cold. He also took on the gas heater and was determined to make it heat the house - a frustrating effort. As a present for Evan's birthday Evan and I went to a 4wd driver training course with the 4wd club - we have decided that we probably wont stay in Caboolture as there is one person who is so unpleasant that we don't want to waste our spare time in dealing with him - he is one of the club officials and is so rude and arrogant that we just do not want to have anything to do with him. It's a shame as we have had some good outings with the club and on the whole the people are really welcoming and pleasant. He turned up at the driver training and that made up our minds. However we have met some of the people from Kallangur club and it is much closer and more convenient for Evan to attend. For me it is 6 of one and half a dozen of the other - but with summer coming up Kermit will sit in the driveway for a few months as it will get too hot to be comfortable. For my birthday I had hinted to John I wanted to see the Mikado but it had finished before I got it sorted. John told me I had to be ready at noon on Saturday to go out and we had a lovely day - he had organised to be at the art gallery for the Sydney Nolan exhibition and a tour of the art gallery with 2 volunteers. We went onto the museum and saw the VC exhibition and then over to the casino for a while, a casual tea of turkish bread, ham and cheese at QPAC and then onto My Fair Lady - it was a great day and I really appreciated his efforts. On Fathers' Day (my birthday) Evan and Sarah came for lunch and I had a nana nap as I was beat from the day before - we had done a lot of walking and I was feeling it. Then it was off to Newcastle to see Deb, who happened to be moving to a new house and then onto Sydney for lunch with the girls from school. Deb has been living with her parents since her son Karl went to WA to live with his father and had located a small terrace house close to work in Newcastle. It was a bit off-putting as it was not in a very good state but once the landlord saw it and a couple of friends dropped in it was spruced up and ready for occupation. I picked up a hire car and went to meet John at Joanne's. His uncle Reg had died and he had unexpectedly flown to Sydney for the funeral. On the way to pick up John I got to the M4 and the hire car started beeping at me - flashing a picture of a coffee cup on the dash - I got Jo to bring John to Macca's on Mamre Road and then we headed off to Campbelltown to meet Chris and Kerrie for tea. We stayed the night with them and then I had to pick up Sue Beashel from Sydney Airport to go to the class reunion. Arriving at Birkenhead Sue and I struggled through scaffolding and stuff and got to the restaurant. What a great time we had!!! 44 of us met for lunch and it was wonderful to see everyone. The photographer Kaylene had organised was a bit of a pain and he was late and people wanted to leave but the photo got done and we all had a great time - some of us retired to Ann's house at Annandale and I finally folded into bed at midnite. John had gone onto his school reunion that he hadn't planned to go to and he turned up at 7.30 after having no sleep at all. We had breakfast with Ann and David and then John and I headed off to mum's. I had asked Alan and Sue could we come for tea on Sunday nite as mum doesn't get out much at nite and so it was great to have John with me and we all went for tea. I dropped John off at the airport and then back to mums - heading off to the airport again on Monday morning. Back to work again!!! Joanne came up for a few days and so her and I went to the movies on Thursday and then off to see The Carpenters from Kempsey on Friday. We stayed at the apartment on Friday and Jo headed home on Saturday - John and I went out with Max and Carol on Saturday to a Ulysses Club Trivia Nite where Max's team won silver medals for coming second. Max has ended up with a broken leg in a metal frame and his hand suffered a bit of damage - he will be off work for a few months and is restricted to a wheelchair but otherwise he is ok. July 10 Bush pubs and outback iconsThings have been quiet for a while as we have been preparing for our bush pubs and outback icons trip which commenced on 30 June.
To see our photos go to my Facebook photos
We were to meet the group at Nindigully pub near St George.
So on 28 June we left to go to somewhere near St George to camp - we planned to get to at least Goondawindi.
However the best laid plans of mice and men are often thrawted....
Leaving a little late on Saturday we headed off down the Centenary Highway at the back of Brisbane. Kermit objected strongly and stalled at every intersection unless John revved the engine really hard. Once through the traffic we went along fine and eventually made it to Goondawindi where we camped the night.
Next morning a young fellow asked could he take a photo - he was a mechanic so i asked would he adjust the idling for me which he did - the idling increased and we figured all would be well. The maintenance man at the caravan park said he would have a look for me if the other fellow couldnt fix it. After a run into town and a few hiccups he had a look and we headed off to Nindigully. However we still had problems with the idling.
At Nindigully Pub we met the group and said we would go into St George the next day to have the car seen to and would meet up with them in Hungerford in a couple of days. However Bob, the trip leader, would have none of that - he immediately stripped down the carby and did what he could but we needed a new gasket and there was none available at Nindigully. It was decided we should go into St George and meet with the group 2 days later in Hungerford.
John and I ordered one mixed grill for both of us because it contained 2 sausages, 2 steaks, 2 pieces of bacon, 2 chops, 2 eggs. Several others also shared - including Deb and Jim whose meal never eventuated. The cook must have been having a really bad day - there were 18 of us for dinner and the meals took about 1 1/2 hours to arrive. He then left and poor Deb and Jim had to go back to their tent at 9pm at night and cook bacon and eggs for tea.
Off we went at 6.30am the next day to St George and organised for Kermit to get a new carby kit - however the courier who was supposed to pick up the parts at Dalby forgot to get them and Repco lent us a car to drive 300k's to Dalby and 300 back to get the part.
While at St George we stayed at a pristine caravan park where the average age of the inmates was about 75 who would have major problems looking over the dashboard of their serious 4wds and the caravans gave our house some serious competition.
John will never complain about me taking my pushbike on holidays ever again as we had it to run around St George for the 2 days we were stuck there and I also went for a couple of lovely rides along the river.
After our run to Dalby the mechanics worked until 9pm fixing Kermit and we were able to head off to Hungerford at 8.30 the next day. However we used 1 whole tank of petrol covering 100k's so at Bollon we found a backyard mechanic who gave us a hand and adjusted the carby - petrol consumption improved to 250k's per tank but was well below what Kermit usually used. This meant we had to carry petrol along the whole trip.
We joined up with the group at Hungerford and I met Kerry Canning who I had gone to school with in 1968 to 1971 - we had a lovely evening and Kerry spoke to Bob and Marion, who ran the trip, about making her woolshed available for them in a trip next year.
Off we went to Tibaboora along the dog fence and station tracks and had dinner in the pub that evening. Next was Cameron's Corner, then Noccundra, Eromanga, Eulo and Thallon having dinner in the local pub each night. Each car had a UHF radio and we kept in contact warning about roos, emus, on-coming cars and other hazards as we went along.
On the roads between Tibaboora and Camerons Corner I managed to bend the tow bar and we didnt have to tow the trailer for a few days - Bob and Marion took it and we had a great time just driving Kermit. Once we arrived at Eulo Bob arranged for us to have the tow bar reinforced at Cunnamulla and we spent the morning there - meeting the group for morning tea and then catching up with them again at Thallon.
At Cunnamulla I didnt use the key to close the petrol cap and we were unable to open it further along the road - so we had to jemmy it off and destroy it to get more petrol in - nothing a bit of rag hanging out of the filling hole wouldnt fix till we got an emergency petrol cap. The lid came off and the locking mechanism is sitting in the petrol tank.
The morning temperatures were generally about 0 but at Eulo it was -2 at 6.45 and -4 at sunrise - the sun rises a lot later out west.
Thallon was -4 and we decided that one more morning of this was too much and we headed home - the trip leader had been ill and was prepared to continue but we all had had enough of the cold - driving in convoy on bitumen roads wasnt as much fun as outback.
Kermit's lack of seals means that there is red dirt in every imaginable crevice and crack. It is so fine that I imagine we will be cleaning it out for weeks. My jeans are so ingrained with dirt I dont imagine they will ever come clean. Every morning we had a photo taken outside the pub where we ate the night before - I have the same clothes on each day - I decided that I only wanted one set of clothes completely destroyed. John's beautiful warm Freightcorp jumper which I often use when we are on holidays is ingrained with about 2 kilos of dirt.
We had a wonderful time and the people were really great - as you find on trips like this there was lots of different personalities. Sometimes you wonder why people go on holidays. Once we got to know each other we got on very well - however there was one sour faced puss who was the most unpleasant person we have ever met - we ended up at the dinner table with her on the last nite and she sat with her back to us - was pretty hard to do but she managed - after eating our meal we left the table - we found the whole situation so ridiculous. She spent the whole trip pointing out how lacking in knowledge we were about camping and 4wd vehicles, how deficient Kermit was, how much trouble we were being because Kermit had a few problems, how inconsiderate we were. She was a real piece of work - in all our travels we have never come across anyone like her - no matter how pleasant we tried to be she cut us short, made spiteful remarks, dismissed our conversations and ridiculed us. After a couple of days we just decided to ignore her.
Bob and Marion who ran the trip were wonderfully professional, took all our problems in their stride and quickly resolved them. They reassured us that the problems we had were well within the normal problems they encountered on a trip and never batted an eyelid. Overall we would highly recommend taking your Toorak Tractor, Kenmore Commodore or North Shore shopping trolley on a trip like this. You are fully supported and guided through some of the most amazing places which you would never travel on your own. May 25 Dinner and a Sunday driveRobyn and Alan Gersbach asked us down to Reedy Creek and we went out for dinner on Friday nite and then we stayed overnite and went to Currumbin surf club for breakfast which was excellent. On the way home we called at Caboolture and looked at a second camper trailer but missed out on that one too.. However on Sunday Evan and I went on a run to Blackbutt with the 4wd club - have a look at our photos - it was a very dusty run and we had a really good day. The men from the club are happy to coach you thru any difficult bits and weren't phased when I nearly tipped ours over - they just calmly assessed my situation and told me how to drive out of the car eating rut I was in. Evan was very impressed with how safe everything was - you could have some fun and do stuff that you wouldn't attempt on your own because there are people there to talk you thru it and give you advice on how to do it safely. We set off early Sunday morning and there was fog in the valleys on the way thru - by the end of the day the dust was as think as the fog and we had a good time. The run started at Nanango about 10am and went thru the 7 Mile Diggings and onto the Old Esk Road - both have been closed off to the public so we had permits to go thru. We came out of the forest at Blackbutt about 3pm. At lunch time beside a creek the men had a reversing contest - trying to reverse the cars back to exactly over the strap laid on the ground. Evan came last but as our mirrors are decidedly dodgy and you had to use mirrors he was at a vast disadvantage. Have put the run in Google Maps John went to football. May 18 Night Nav run with the 4wd clubI wrote this for the 4wd newsletter as I was nominated to do the run report. Have a look at Night Nav Run – 17 May 2008 in my Google maps. This is our first ‘run’ with the club – we knew some people because of our trip to Janowen Hills on Australia Day weekend and I had been to the meetings but this was a club run that John could actually do. Not really knowing exactly what was happening I went looking for my trusty newsletter to check – bad idea – can’t find it. Oh well they said to be at Centenary Lakes to have tea and leave by dark – so picnic packed, off we go. John’s first question was at the roundabout at Morayfield – did we have raincoats? “Of course we do – they’re in the back.”. (Knowing full well there were no raincoats but I wasn’t going to let him turn around and go home) “We even have an umbrella!” (shame it was the cotton sunshade he got second hand when I wanted some shade for the pool) There was no way I was going to let him get out of this one. Got to the lakes, had a nice tea – shame about the downpour just as we sat down to eat but John hates salad and loves stew – at a pinch steak, salad and rainwater looks like stew. Slowly people turned up – Darrel, Jodie and Talia, Ian and Lenore and kids, and the place slowly filled up. After dinner Brian announces we aren’t leaving from here we are leaving from the Big Fish – all around knowingly nod – I begin to ask my 500 mandatory questions when I am going anywhere – Big Fish? What big fish? Were we supposed to bring fishing gear? Are we going fishing? Where? All’s cool, my 500 questions have now been answered and we head off to the Humble Pie – never found out what happened to the big fish – must have got away. After some preliminary niceties we sign the sheet and go to head off – only I realise we have to use our odometer – shame about that, only the far right number turns – the rest have sat on 42599 for the past 12 months we have had the car. Fiddle with the GPS and then decide to chance it and see how we go. John’s first comment in the car was that if it didn’t work out we could just give up and go home. There was no way I was going home – I would make this work or die trying. Out of the carpark and down the road towards Donnybrook – first question, what’s the sign on the left? Which one? There’s 10 signs on the left – how far down the road? The one as we came out? The one at the corner? The one for the highway? The one after? Oh well write ‘em all down. What’s the next question? So off we go, flying down the road and John says “I think we have gone 5k’s” “What do you mean? You think? Didn’t you check, read the odometer, keep an eye on it?” “No, I can’t see the odometer cos the light is too bad and I need my glasses” “You can’t drive in reading glasses!!” We put the miner’s light I am using to read the destructions on the steering column and shine it on the odometer – that works!!! We can see it turn now. Find another light for the destructions and we are off again. Ok let’s turn around and work this out – I really don’t know where to measure the 4.6k’s from. Head back to Humble Pie and start again – we work out it’s 4.6k’s from the corner we were at to Humble Pie so we have found the first corner. We head back to where we were and fill in the rest of the questions we found answers to. This isn’t so bad – write down the odometer reading as we get to the corner and then count from there – we’ll be fine (or so we thought). Ok down the dirt road we go, I see a little break in the bush but John won’t turn there – he goes 500 metres down the next turn and I convince him to go back as the corner wasn’t the same as the diagram in the destructions. So back we go, reversing in the dark – god only know how much native flora, fauna and cane toads we are destroying as we go crashing along in the dark – we get occasional glimpses of headlights and some radio calls so we know we won’t die at this point. Head off down the track that emerges from the break in the bush and suddenly we can hear lots of people. Ian is stuck fast in the mud – Michael is helping and Dan is banked up behind. Apparently Ian was into his second winching and was despairing when Michael turned up. They told us to take the high road which didn’t seem any less muddy than what Ian was in but at least we got through. John asks what the next question was – question? What question? Bugger the questions lets just drive we could die in here. So off we go. Not before finding a required Banksia leaf. Somewhere around here I lost the pen. We were doing really well navigating till just after we found the pile of stumps – who the hell is Muzz? Maybe the stumps on the road mean we are not supposed to go down this road? No – there’s has been cars down here – look, all the trees across the road have been recently broken let’s keep going. Ok we’ve done that one. Now turn right and go .06k and turn right. This is where we became completely lost and disorientated and John started having the first of many kittens – however we found Michael, Ian, Dan and Mr Pajero man who took us under their wing and lead us a merry chase for the rest of the evening – we even found the greeny/orange dome – but how you could tell there was a well for a bore in it is beyond me. The directions seemed to be for a completely different area than we were in. Then suddenly the questions were linking up to the places we were going – we must be back on the right track. Someone mentioned Steve Irwin Way – but isn’t that the other side of the Bruce Highway? We started looking for the &^%$!! carpark where Brian said “you have to go through the place where it says no through road and then past some machinery and find the rough track”. John says this is where they are building the pipeline and we can’t go in there – Michael says “Yes we can” – so off we go in convoy – no one is giving much away but we are having a good time and it’s a nice night. At some stage I saw what I thought were tobacco plants and some tall things that turned out to be happy plants but the rest of the night was just some serious reassuring to John that we weren’t going to die after all and it was a much better night than staying at home and watching The Bill. John – who hasn’t been to a pub in 20 years – said he was going to the pub for a drink when we finished. We heard Sandi’s plaintiff cries over the radio and told her not to go up that track on the right near the arrow (that we later found out Brian had put there as he didn’t want us to go up the track). Michael Ian and Dan had headed up it but came down as quickly as they could – However Sandi, Damo and Bec went up and Damo swears that he had the 2 front wheels in the air as he reversed back down – Bec volunteered that while she found rock scrambling boring sometimes – this was quite scary. Apparently at this stage they decided to set the GPS for Old Gympie road and get out of there. We all ended up at the rest stop and prizes were handed out – Darrel and Jodie who finished last came up with the goods and scored top score – John and I lost our pen about question 10 and were more concerned about getting out alive so we got the booby prize. The final count for the night was 10 starters, Dave (?) dropped out and 9 cars made the Matthew Flinders rest stop. We got a bit concerned about Darrel and Jodie but they turned up in the end. Sandi mentioned at one stage she had caught them canoodling in the car so there was nothing to worry about. At 11.15pm 2 very weary and exhausted travellers headed home – what a good night! I would love to go back in the daytime and see just where we went. John went to football early before I could get the chance to ask. May 17 A few quiet weeks and some veges to comeWe have had a quiet couple of weeks - Joanne was house sitting in Evans
Head for 2 weeks and so she came up here on the Labour Day weekend and
we went into Ruth's apartment for the nite - up Mt Cootha (which is
becoming our standard for visitors) to see the lights and have a
coffee. Next day breakfast at the Coffee Club at Riverside and then a
trip on the rivercats. Jo headed off on the Tuesday and we went back to work - however last week the hospital stopped calling John and he had no work for a few days - but he is back again now doing some evening shifts - it is really frustrating as the only way they operate is to ring him at 5.30am if they need him - generally to be there by 6am - then tell him not to bother as he needs an hour at least to get there. So it appears now they are giving him evening shifts. Hope it keeps up. On Anzac weekend we went to the 'tinny and tackle and 4wd' show and met the people running the trip - it is now going from St George and John and I are hoping to go to 'Injune in June' which we attended last year on the way back from Blackwater. It is a campfire night at the caravan park and they have bush poets and story tellers and a camp oven meal made by the locals. We had such a good time last year we are hoping to do so again. On Mother's day weekend I helped Evan move to a new house at Clear Mountain - well the house is by no means new but it is a new address where he can park the truck without incurring a fine for doing so. He got a $3-400 fine at the last house. He has met Sarah and they are living together - sharing costs and so he will be much better off despite the dearer rent. It is quite a trek to his house - out the back blocks of Brisbane and up a mountain - but they like it. I have started chasing up the girls from school - we are going thru Hungerford on our tag along tour and so I rang Kerry Canning (Hatch) and asked her and hubby to come to dinner at Hungerford pub the nite we are there - it will be good to see her - the last time I saw her was in 1972 at Canterbury Hospital. So far I have about 30 emails and 17 addresses that appear to be correct. - only about 60 to go to find everyone again. Swimming is becoming a bit of a bother these last few weeks as I sit at work afterwards and am constantly cold - so yesterday I went late in the afternoon and then came home and put on my spencer and warm PJ's which worked better. The Murrumba Downs pool will close at the end of May and I have to decide which pool to go to - I hate changes to my routine - there is Chermside pool (25 metres outside) or Caboolture (50 metres inside) - Chermside is colder than Caboolture but Caboolture is 50 metres and I am not used to 50 metres - though was suprised to find I do it quite easily when I do go - well more easily than I thought I would. I generally swim a kilometre 3 times a week if I can - sometimes 4, sometimes 2. The pool is so quiet and peaceful and I spend the whole time thinkings and working out things - it is really very enjoyable and I miss it when I dont go. We have had no rain for some months - the last lot was when Evan took Kermit to Beerburrum and got stuck - so the back garden was looking scrappy and really needed doing over - so 5 bags of manure and some plants and I have a new vegie garden - the retaining walls are at just the right height for me to look after them with no bending or kneeling - the Karcher pressure washer converts to a nice garden sprayer if you dont use any of the wands for it and the tank is full for winter - the pool takes a lot of water in the winter - far more than in summer. I have to organise the pool cover this year - must do that in July when mum is up. I have beans, cucumbers, capsicum, mint, basil, rocket, tomatoes, bok choi and dozens of lettuce. I should get to use all the veges as I am still constantly fighting my weight - I cant afford to put any more on as my knees cant cope and I do need to lose quite a bit - if only to go for a ride on Max's new bike when he gets it. John and I are hoping to go on a 'Night Nav' with the 4wd club tonite - but I will have to hide his mobile phone so the hospital doesn't ring and ask him to work. If we dont get organised and go on a few runs they will cancel our membership. Evan and I are planning to do the run to Blackbutt next Sunday as John is not available Sundays because of football - and all the 4wd runs are mostly on Sundays - they have a camping weekend on the June long weekend which I was looking forward to but the footy club has football on the Sunday morning (and none the next weekend) - what a way to ruin a long weekend for families - ensuring all the footballer's families cant go away for the long weekend - I find it amazing. April 27 A few Castles, the Titans and a BBQMidway thru last year John's cousin Priscilla and her partner Bevan suprised us all when she told us they were having a baby - she does, after all, have adult children. Anyway after a major scare which saw her in pretty dire straights in hospital along came Mirekel last September. So just recently all the Castles got together for a naming day for Mirekel and Mirekel's niece and nephew Tyron and Aalia (who are several years older than her). We all had a good day and as usual the food and the company was excellent. We also went for a Sunday drive out to Dayborough in Kermit - we intended to do the Mt Mee run that Deb had bailed out of at Xmas - however we stopped off at Louise's place and met her new baby who was just georgeous. Dean and Louise live on a beautiful property in a very nifty flat built into a large shed. They are working on building up a horse business and have a lot of very hard work in front of them. I can only admire their determination. We caught up with Gersie and Robyn, Kim, Alana and Chris and went to the Titans game again - Titans v Broncos at Skilled Park - they tell me it was a really good game - however I just enjoy the social outing and the atmosphere. I played with my new camera and took some really good panorama shots of the stadium which I cant load as the files are too big and I forget how to decrease them. So much for my web design course which taught me all that stuff last year. Dropped John off early at Nerang station just as it started to pour - I went off to Gersie's and John caught the train to Robina to watch the preliminary games. The traffic on the M1 was horrendous so I found my way down the western side of the motorway from Nerang to Reedy Creek - nice houses and lots of exotic roundabouts. I arrived at Gersie's just as John rang to say the rain was pelting down in the stadium - Robyn, her daughter Teneille, Gersie and I headed off for the bus in the rain and by the time we arrived at the stadium the rain had stopped and we all converged on our seats. Kim, Alana and Chris arrived not long after. The atmosphere at the game and the facilities are quite good. Getting in and out is a major expedition but it is all pretty well organised and doesnt take that long. Bus home was not much trouble- few drunks but otherwise fun - especially when it took a wrong turn and ended up in a cul-de-sac and had to to a 15 point turn to get out again - the drunks mostly gave directions to the driver who was unused to the area. We had a short walk in the rain to the house and sat up till 2.30am having a chin wag - Saturday sleep in and a further chin wag. Then John and I set off to Brisbane to organise a BBQ - we were to go to Mt Coot-tha to see the lights turn on at sunset but threatening rain meant we went to Ruth's apartment in the city and had a BBQ with Max, Carol, Alan and Robyn. We had a great evening and John cooked some beautiful steaks, Max brought prawns and we consumed heaps of wine - I think I counted 8 bottles next morning. We had far too much food. Late night again and up in the morning we went to Riverside to for breakfast and a drive up Mt Coot-tha and walk thru the Botanic Gardens. Alan and Robyn headed back to Reedy Creek and we were off to home. Dropped into Carols on the way home and said hello. April 26 Where did the photos go?I was recently using Windows Live Writer to edit this site and it used to let me very easily put photos in the story - but for some reason it doesnt work anymore and the photos have disappeared so it's back to the photo albums if you want to see the photos. Helen April 12 Our next adventure I have been getting emails from Brisbane Hinterland 4wd and have managed to co-ordinate when they have a trip and when there is no football so we are going on a Bush pubs and outback Icons tour and we are really looking forward to it. Have a look at this link to Google Maps and see where we are going. I think I am so clever for having set this up. It's fun and easy to do in Google Maps. In the middle of this map is the area we are going to cover - we start at St George west of Toowoomba, south the Hebel and Hungerford on the NSW border and north to Windorah and Adavale - east to Nobby near Toowoomba. April 01 A dash to Sydney and backIt is mum's birthday on 31 March and I headed off to Sydney for a few days. Garth was on his way to the Gold Coast so he dropped me off at the airport. As I was on leave I rewarded myself with my favourite treat and purchased 'The Other Boleyn Girl' - a historical novel which was the source for the recent movie of the same name. However if you see the movie you have not heard the complete story and the movie actually leaves out more than it says - so do yourself a favour and buy or borrow the book - it is a really good read and I highly recommend it. I flew in on Wed and courtesy of Commonwealth Award points picked up a great little Toyota Corolla from Thrifty and went straight to Ruth & Phil's at Stanwell Park - Ruth was my team leader in Wollongong in 2000 and is now retired - they have a lovely house in Stanwell Park and let us use their apartment in Brisbane city when we want to. Their son Will is at the end of his studies as a lawyer (solicitor?) and they are looking forward to becoming one of the many families who are moving to Qld to live - a quick overnight stay and off to Danielle's place, at Kembla Grange to visit her new baby, Piper. I worked with Danielle in Wollongong office and we had a lovely time catching up and gossiping. I also met Victoria who is from the same office and is due to have her baby soon. Then on Thursday I went to meet my friend Chris for dinner at Macarthur Square. I had a bit of fun with the Napolean Perdis counter and pleaded ignorance of their products so they would do my makeup before dinner as I had left my makeup bag on the bed at home and didn't even have a bit of lippy to make me look decent for dinner. The young girl on the counter made me look halfway decent and I promptly went into DJ's and purchased some reasonably priced makeup that was on special. I have known Chris since 5th form (year 11) at school and we have remained firm friends over the years. Along with Ann, who I met in 1st form (year 7), he is one of the two oldest and dearest friends I have. I make it a habit of catching up with both of them as often as I can. I stayed overnight at Chris & his partner Kerrie's place at Campbelltown and then on to visit Auntie Barb at Bradbury. Barb is John's father's sister. Auntie Barb caught me up with all the family gossip and we had a lovely couple of hours chat on the verandah overlooking the park - no wonder she doesn't want to move - she has such a lovely view. I had arrived a bit early and caught her short so didn't ask for a photo. On Friday afternoon I arrived at mum's we had some lunch and headed off to the movies and saw 'The Other Boleyn Girl' before we headed home and unpacked the new computer Cheryl had bought for her. I am a real fan of movies about Henry VIII, Elizabeth I & Ann Boleyn - there was a whole crop of them around when I was in my late teens and I have always enjoyed them - this movie had a different tack on the life of Ann Boleyn and she was apparently not as nice as she was painted in 'Ann of a thousand days..'. I really liked this movie. Of course new computers don't take old printers so off to Kmart for a new printer and scanner. Luckily Kmart had a sale on and I got a HP on clearance for $70. It was about this time mum told me her microwave had also given up the ghost!!! A trip to Aldi solved that on Saturday morning. This now meant mum had a whole lot of boxes, an old computer, microwave etc - Luckily Jo said she would take the old 'puter for Matthew and so mum and I piled into the car with all the boxes and the microwave and did a dumpster run thru Penrith. The number of people who lock their dumpster is a real pain when you are looking to get rid of rubbish. Eventually we were able to dispose of all the boxes and the microwave and then took the car for a run looking for the new road to Castlereagh - mum's car is not travelling too well these days and by the time we finished the dumpster run and drove out to the rowing centre it had good strong simmer going in the radiator. We pulled up and let the bubbling noises die. A young fellow and his girlfriend even stopped and offered assistance which was a pleasing suprise. However we were expecting the worst when we set out and mum had water in the car - we just waited till it cooled down and headed home. The boiling radiator confirmed I could not drive it to Katoomba for our day out on Sunday. I had been going to ask Mike to get his friend Ron to fire up the Jag and take us but mum pointed out the traffic on Sundays up the mountains is horrendous so we decided to go on the train. Sunday was a lovely day - not a cloud in the sky so we headed off to the station and met Mike on the train to Katoomba. Apart from the trip on the Indian Pacific when we were still living in Shellharbour, I have not been on a train up the mountains since I left boarding school in Lawson in 1967. It was lovely to be in the mountains and having experienced travelling in many places, I now know why we think the Blue Mountains are so beautiful. The bush was green and fresh and there was no bushfire damage as this year there had been no fires in the summer. We had a one hour trip to Katoomba which I enjoyed immensely - I love travelling by train and have never not enjoyed a train trip for pleasure. John is still spitting chips that we have Gold Passes for NSW railways and live in Qld. In case you are wondering his 30 years on NSW railways entitles us both to free train, bus and ferry travel in NSW forever - 1st class if available. We do get 1/2 price in Qld on country services run by Qld rail - however most of the really good country trains are now privately owned and we usually join the YHA (Youth Hostels Australia) to get backpacker rates if we are travelling on them. We are planning to take Kermit to Cairns by train and travel back slowly - either this winter or next. We arrived at the Carrington Hotel for high tea at 2.30 and were shown to a beautifully set table which was a bit close to the piano and after a quick table change we settled in to have afternoon tea. The dining room was quite grand and the service was good. We were given a 3 tier tray of small bits and pieces which were very appetising - sandwiches, mini quiches, cheese, crackers, dried fruit. Just the sort of thing that mum likes as you can have a little bit of everything. You had unlimited teas or coffees and a wide choice so we did have a good time of it. An old fellow tinkled away on the piano and played quite well - he did come around at one stage and ask us if we were enjoying ourselves? We had a quick walk around town to fill in some time before returning on the train to Penrith - I can highly recommend this as an outing as we thoroughly enjoyed it. While at Katoomba station I had a play with the timer on the new camera I had recently purchased and took a photo of us using the rubbish bin - it was fine. Joanne had asked us for lunch on Monday and then kindly volunteered to drive me to the airport on Tuesday - she is such a trooper as last time she took mum with her for a ride and they got hopelessly lost around Ingleburn as they missed the turn off for the M7. However we took careful notice of where to turn and hopefully she got home OK -well she has not rung me for directions and so I presume she did. The flight home was uneventful and for once the Qantas Club Lounge was not 2 miles from the Jetstar departure gate. Kermit had been in with Ian at Narangba Autos getting his handbrake done and was all ready for me to pick up when I got off the train. I am off to the 4wd club meeting tonite so I can find out when our next adventure will be. March 17 Zingara and TitansI got a message from Fly Buys that I had expiring points so I headed to the Fly Buys website and found we had enough points to go to Zingara at Jupiter's Casino, we had to go to the Gold Coast anyway and had tickets for the Titan's game so we organised a couple of days at Kims - however we would have been very late in arriving after the show so we went to the Secret Rooms on lastminute.com and got a great deal for a night at The Pines resort. 5 star at bargain basement prices - we had a great time. The photo on the right is taken from the 20th floor of a building at Bundall where we met the fellow who looks after our superfund. So after Zingara we headed out to The Pines and stayed the night and after a soak in the spa and a swim in the pool we headed off to spend the day in Surfers. We were accosted at Pacific Fair by one of the holiday companies and went to a 90minute presentation so that we could get a weeks holiday on the Gold Coast for $179. The salesman was not impressed when we said we wouldnt pay $30,000 for a lifetime investment in a holiday unit for two weeks a year. They successfully showed us how we would probably spend $250,000 in the next 30 years on holidays - then recalculated when we pointed out we would be 70 in 15 years and not likely to be wanting as many holidays - so they cut that back to $70,000 in 15 years. Anyway we scored a week on the Gold Coast for $179 out of it - we just have to work out how we are going to use it. We then met up with Kim, Alana and her friend Chris and headed off to Skilled Park for the Titans season opener. 30,000 people getting to a stadium on the Gold Coast is a major exercise but we caught the bus from Palm Beach and home and had no problems at all. The stadium was great and the atmosphere was electric. We all had a good nite. Home again Saturday for voting in the elections and the footy season has started so John was off to a game on Sunday. March 08 Rain is relenting, we have had some sunThe rain has finally relented and we have only had one lot of rain this week - tonite there was a bit of a downpour but not that much. Evans adventure - see the photos The other week when the rain was pretty bad - the day before they predicted destructive winds and flash floods - Evan asked could he take Kermit for a drive. He went with a friend up to the forests at Beerburrum - ever since Kermit broke down on Bribie Island I told him has to go with someone - anyway they were on their way home and Evan took a wrong turn and ended up being stranded - after about 4 hours he rang me and to make a long story short we had to get a recovery vehicle in. As you can tell from the pictures it was absolutely miserable. The car is on a track in the forest and when he got stuck the water was not so high - it was 4 hours before he was able to get hold of me and the water rose quite quickly. The reason why the truck is on an angle is because Evan was trying to go around a puddle he didn't think he should drive thru. Evan had no sense of humour about it for quite a while but I am sure now he can see the funny side of it. There was no damage but a lot of mud - Evan had to get the Gerni and wash out the cab - there was even mud on the passenger window sills - it was everywere. When I was talking to the mechanic the other day he said a friend's son had done the same thing and it took an excavator and 16 hours to get him out so it looks like Evan got off lightly. Not long after that we had a day of 40 degrees and we spent the day in the pool. Deb was up from Newcastle, Max and Carol and Bill from work came and we had a good day. About 4-5pm the temperature suddenly dropped to 25 degrees. The weather since has been warm but nothing like the 40 degree day again. John has a new job at Brisbane Hospital as a patient support officer - he comes home exhausted but is really enjoying it. He has a lot to learn and some modules to do to finalise his course he did to do the job - he is casual and on call so it's a bit of a bugger but so much better than being out with the heat, rain, flies, mud, fumes of being a traffic controller. We are off to the Gold Coast on Thursday as we have enough FlyBuys to go to Zingara at Jupiter's Casino and then we have tickets for the Titans game on Friday. We will stay with Kim at Palm Beach. February 10 A few days awayKim came up from the Gold Coast and I met her at Alexandra Headland for a couple of days away - Kermit was supposed to come but there is no beach left up the Sunshine Coast to drive on and any that is there is a 3ft drop from the road - so sadly Kermit had to stay home. Kim was happy as we had been upgraded to a penthouse apartment which did not turn out to be what we expected. The apartment left a lot to be desired - the lounge was grotty, there was no decent curtaining and it faced the sunrise so was like a sauna in the morning. So we turned on the air-conditioning and went out to have a good time. We went to Eumundi Markets and had a look around. Back to Lifeline to buy a couple of books and then spent the next day by the pool - reading for 6 hours straight, interrupted only by our Subway lunch. We had tea at the pub one night and then tried the 2 surf clubs which were good and generally did nothing for 3 days - it was lovely. The wet weather is still persisting - apparently we have had forty days and nights of rain - the beach is just about non existent however the weather was warm enough for us not to worry at all about the rain. John rang to say he had a new job at Brisbane Hospital but we don't know the details yet but it will be an improvement on working in the weather - don't know what was worse the heat last summer or the rain this year. Back home on Friday and a quiet weekend till returning to work on Monday. January 29 Australia Day WeekedIn an effort to improve our non-existant social life we are looking into joining Caboolture 4wd club - so we went along on a weekend away with them to Janowen 4wd Park. After packing up Kermit we headed off towards Warwick. We stopped at midday for lunch at Aratula, where Helen spotted Wayne Bennett (Bronco's coach) at the coffee shop. We moved on and arrive about 1.30ish. Once we got to the site it was easy to find the people we were joining and so we chose a spot and it was at that time I realised I had never put up a tent before. Once I said that, Sandi, the club secretary took over and within half an hour we had the tent up and were ready to begin camping. It became known that we hadn't done it before and some of the members took up posts in the peanut gallery to observe the goings on. Mary also came to help and the peanut gallery had nothing to gawk at as we had it up in no time. Saturday afternoon was time for a bit of a rest while some of the club went out on a drive and we just fiddled around and set ourselves up. Saturday night was fun around a campfire after tea - then off to bed on our nice new camp stretchers - the dew on the ground in the evening was quite heavy and while the days were very hot the nights were very cold - I had luckily thrown 2 blankets into the bags as we left - just in case. We could have used our heavy wool quilt or a couple more blankets. It got very cold overnight and the blankets just did. Sunday morning was bright and cloudless and after breakfast we headed off on our first run. We knew Kermit was limited both by his ability and ours. So when Ian told me it was rated as an easy run I jumped eagerly into the drivers seat and told John he could do the hard bits. However Kermit's lack of working handbrake caused some heart stopping moments when we tried to get up a grade to go on the run. Ian organised for Dave to tow us over the hairy bits and then we were fine but we are going to have to do something about the handbrake. Being such an old car we know that it will take quite a bit to get it going and even then it wont work that well - we were told that is why all old Landcruisers are parked with the wheels into the gutter - to stop them rolling. So once we got out of that bit John took over and I took some photos. However there are no photos of really hairy bits as I was hanging on too hard to worry about photos. We wont be able to go on any more runs until we get the handbrake fixed. After the morning run we went down to the creek - which was running quite well - it had been crystal clear but the swimmers had stirred it up. However the water was beautifully cool in the heat of the day and we had a swim. One of the women got a small leech on her foot and we decided to get out - then John turned up and I went back in - next thing you know John got a leech on his foot. I got some salt from a camper and and it was quickly removed. A little first aid to the bleeding wound and all was well. After lunch we got to go for a run in other club members' cars and were in awe of the capability of the trucks - we were only out for a short drive - one fellow tried to go up a couple of the extreme runs and we all stopped to watch. John cooked tea Saturday nite and we had another campfire. Helen had a go at making damper in a camp over and then off to bed early. Overall we had a wonderful time but had to make some serious decisions about how much money to pour into Kermit. He's fine to go for a run on the beach but if we want to go really 4wd we will have to have a few things fixed. Back to work on Tuesday for Helen and Wednesday for John Snake is coming to visit on the weekend and Helen is going to Seaforth Apartments Alexandra Headland with Kim for 3 nights next week. January 25 Last days of Xmas breakJo and the kids came up to stay and I went down to Jupiters and stayed overnight with her. On the way I picked up some new camp stretchers at Wild Earth at West Burleigh - they were about $30 cheaper than anywhere else, longer and wider (214 x 84) and had a much higher rating for the weight they would hold (150kg). Spent the next day at Pac Fair shopping with Kim and then came home. Kim managed to get a nice outfit and I found a cheap tshirt. On Saturday we went to Bribie Island for a picnic and John took the kids and Jo on the beach for a run. Jo had a go of driving in the carpark and decided to wait until we were on a clear road before trying. We found out that Raymond's licence forbids him from driving a manual while on his P1 licence so he sadly didnt get a go of driving - Jo, Jess, Michele and I left John, Mathew and Raymond on the beach run and came home to get ready for a BBQ with Steven, Alicia, Priscilla & Bevan. I sort of neglected to tell anyone Priscilla was coming until she was due and it was a lovely suprise - Steven said the last time he saw Jo was at his 21st in 1978 and the last time he saw Priscilla was at her wedding in 1984. Priscilla's baby, Mirakel, was lovely and is the image of Coby. Sunday Jo decided that there would be no more driving to the Gold Coast and we had a quiet day at home. Raymond and Michelle went Chermside Westfield and then Evan turned up and took Matthew and Jess out in Kermit - they went to the forests up the Bruce Hwy near Caloundra and Steve Irwin Way and apparently both had a go at driving - how on earth Jess reached the pedals is beyond me - but Evan figures they didnt have a licence they could lose!! At one stage Evan rang and said they would be a while because they were lost but the ended up coming home and all was well. On Sunday John and I worked out a way of putting some ply in Kermit as a false floor and Jo suggested we use it as a picnic table - so we devised a plan and went off to Bunnings to spend a kings ransom. A couple of days later I found some trestle legs and boot lining and you should see the back of Kermit now!!! We have a false floor over the wheel arches and under it we have channels for storing the sun umbrella, the stretchers, the jack, the snatch kit, ropes and lots of other stuff. I put 5 coats of estapol on the table part - 4 on the others and we now have a very handy picnic table built into the truck - see photos of Australia day weekend. On Saturday, after the stint on Bribie I gave Kermit an underbody bath to strip the sand and salt and had a march/horse fly bite me on the arm - didnt think much of it till Sunday nite about 8.30 - after a trip to the hospital, the private doctors surgery next door and a dose of phenergan I went off to fairyland for 24 hours as the pain had become pretty bad and the bite was about the size of a small golf ball and so hot I could cook a steak on it. Jo left at 3am and I slept for the next 24 hours. John and I are going to a 4wd park this weekend with our newly gathered camping equipment with Caboolture 4wd club - we are looking at joining and improving our social life. During the past week I have managed to find 2 more 2nd cousins who are from the Eve family in UK. Took a bit of detective work and the Times Digital Index but I am really pleased to have found them - I am still on a mission to locate all of grandfather Eve's brothers and sisters children. I have done it for all the other grandparents and just want to finish off that generation. The mango tree is being attacked nightly by bats and in the morning there is always some mangoes on the ground with varying degrees of damage - from just a few scratches to half and even fully eaten - so I chuck out the really bad ones and save the ones with just a few scratches on them - the rest of the mangoes look ready to ripen over the weekend so I told Sandra the cleaner and Peter and Amanda next door to take what they could - by the time we get back on Monday there will probably be none left. The mangoes are beautiful - there is no hint of stringyness and the flavour is wonderful - most are massive - probably due to the water they got- around September when the flowers came on we had a good lot of rain and then in October when it got hot I siphoned some of the excess pool water onto the tree and as it has been raining just about every day since the beginning of December the water has ensured the mangoes are sweet and juicy. I am hoping the 2 bunches of bananas will benefit just as well - the last bunches we got werent very big so hopefully this will help them to grow bigger. Will add more once we get back from the weekend. January 04 Christmas comes and goesHere we are in a new year. The mango tree is loaded with fruit, the macadamias are the size of (small) golf balls and there is 2 bunches of bananas growing. It has been raining for two weeks the pool and the tank are overflowing and the grass is growing at an amazing rate.
We started out December by going to lunch for Max's birthday - Max was my team leader in 1999 in Melbourne and has recently moved to Brisbane - his friend Carol organised a suprise lunch and then a morning tea at work.
Finished up work on 18 December, had the car detailed, the washing machine fixed and the lounge steam cleaned and picked mum at the airport on 19th. Deb arrived with a flourish on the 20th.
Woke up Friday planning to have a nice quiet day prior to heading off the the hairdressers - however Deb had no intention of wasting her holiday in Qld so off we go to Chermside for a morning's shopping, back to the hairdresser. Garth arrived Friday late and headed off for a night out on the town - then slept for the next 18 hours or so. We put up the Xmas lights.
Saturday saw John and Deb off in Kermit and mum and I followed in the Subaru - they were to travel via a 4wd track to The Gantry in the Mt Mee forest park. Mum and I were to go by the normal road and meet them there. However Deb took one look at the track and decided mountain climbing was not for her. We had a lovely picnic in the day use area and then travelled to Woodford for coffee at the quirky little coffee shop we found. John and Deb then headed off to Bribie Island for some fun on the beach and sand tracks. Mum and I headed home. Garth slept as far as I know.
Sunday we prepared for a morning tea. I had a bright idea of inviting all the neighbours to come at 10am for a cup of tea, a sausage sandwich and a chat. The rain had started the night before and didnt look like letting up. Dave from down the street dropped in to let us know he had a family function and by 9.55am I was convinced no one else was going to turn up . About 10am some kids came up the drive and asked was the party on and I asked them to get their parents. Just after that people started flowing in and slowly the place filled up - the rain continued unrelentingly and the kids were all put in the pool (they couldnt get any wetter and it got them out from under our feet). Some people know 1 or 2 others but slowly we all got to know each other. About 5.30 I let the last of the stragglers out the door and put tea on for us all.
Christmas Eve Evan and Carly came to stay the night and we all got up early, Carly had to work and Evan was heading to Carly's mum's for the day. Garth, Mum, Deb, John and I headed off to Surfers Paradise - however on the way we ended up in a 5k gridlock as some idiot had decided to ruin every one in Brisbane's Xmas day by running up the back of another car and jamming up the Gateway motorway. However we cleared the mess and made it to the Marriott and had a lovely lunch. We topped off the lunch with a visit to Kim Kennedy's and then to Deb's brothers place before going home.
Wednesay Bill from work came over for tea and we played "spics and specs".
Deb left Thursday and Garth left Friday. Mum and I had a quiet week and she left on 4 January. I am looking forward to a quiet week.
An electrician is coming on Tuesday to put in some lights as the flouro in the kitchen fell to pieces and so I had to buy a new light fitting - that meant I should get a new one for the dining room - it broke when I put the lounge in the dining room for Evan and Carly on Xmas Eve and that then gave me the opportunity to replace the tacky chandelier in the front entry. Then of course the broken light in the lounge room also needed fixing and now the cieling fans wouldnt match so I have to buy a new one to match the one in the lounge room with the one in the family room - so several hundred gold coins later we will have nice new matching lights (that all work) for the first time since we have been in the house.
Another fellow is coming on Monday to fix the spare dishwasher that Evan owns - if it has to sit here for the next 2 years till he moves then I am going to use it. Will come in handy for BBQs and wont need to carry dirty plates into the house.
Tomorrow I am having the 3rd windscreen replace that we have managed to damage in 18months. 30+ years of driving and we do 3 windscreens in 18 months. The Subaru wasnt even 12 months old. We were driving Kermit one Sunday and got a stone chip then on the way to work just prior to Xmas I got a stone chip in my car that has grown slowly across the windscreen.
Joanne is arriving on 14 or 15 January and I go back to work on 16. November 13 Another trip to the mechanicJohn swears blind everytime we take Kermit out he spends the next 2 weeks in the mechanics.
Well this week is no exception - we found out that the headlights was just a corrosion thing happening with the fuse box and a bit of cleaning helped that out - we now have headlights on a regular basis.
We havent been ready to admit it but the only thing holding the seats in Kermit is the person sitting on them with the seat belt - so this week we finally got around to having them fixed to the floor properly. Another job done.
Then on Saturday we went to Jimna to find the Landcruiser Mountain Park - which is a private 4wd park - it was quite a trip and we took 3-4 hours to get there. Had a lovely lunch at Woodford, found a FJ40 Landcruiser repair manual in a second hand shop and generally just had a nice afternoon. We arrived at about 4 had a quick look around - realised we should have bought petrol at Kilcoy - 60k's back and decided not to try out the trails as we would use too much petrol - however we will go back - we hope to buy a tent and do some camping.
On the way back we consulted our "Dirty Weekends in South East Queensland" book and went via Neurum Creek Bush Retreat which has another private park. No 4wd tracks there but close to the state forest. As we left the GPS pointed us to a dirt road - 10k's to Mt Mee Road - however we must have taken a wrong turn - and ended up driving thru the state forest for an hour and a half looking for the way out - we started to get concerned about 6pm and finally got out at 6.45pm.
John swore black and blue we would never do that again - however if we have a map it would be a fun afternoon.
What we didnt know was that some strangling vines had grabbed the front blinker and ripped it off - it was hanging by a wire - so another trip to the wreckers to find one. The one that broke was quite corroded and probably wouldnt have lasted that long anway.
Kermits new tyres held up quite well only next time we will let them down a bit - the sharp stones were a bit threatening. There was nowhere to stop and let them down and darkness was encroaching.
Kermit just keeps going - John commented again he cant believe how reliable he is - we had a little problem with the starter motor a while ago and he has a nice new one now - we are far more confident about going out in the wild now. October 16 Kermits new tyresWhen we purchased Kermit we knew we would be up for new tyres. Luckily Anthony Battin (Bob & Ree Battin's son) had some hanging around that we could use.
So off we go to Maclean for new tyres - on the way we heard about some car sales in hail ravaged Lismore - however as with most great stories it was too good to be true and I didnt score a new car.
Some yobbo recently decided I needed two big size 12 footprints on the doors of my car so proceeded to do so and leave some major dents in the doors. This, along with a dingle with the Commonwealth Bank carpark column, some sun damage on the bonnet and news that my expected timing chain job will require nothing short of a kings ransom to perform has made me decide to seriously think about what I am going to do with my Sirion. It has been the best car but looks like it is going to soon cost me a fortune - 3 cylinder cars are not easy to change timing chains on and require major mechanical stuff which costs lots of money. Apparently it's cheaper to put in a new (reconditioned) motor!!
Saturday morning we had a bit of a problem with a broken choke cable - but as we are on the path of replacing most major (and minor) components in Kermit we thought this was rather a considerate breakage - how dear can a choke cable be? (Kermit is in being attended to and we will know by the end of the week). We had to see the pool man and went for a bit of a drive which showed us that the decision to buy the tyres was a very good one - the handling of the car has improved massively.
Saturday arvo we had a bit of a kip and a look around the markets before going to the Argyle Hotel for tea which was very nice and where we found a brochure on a jazz cruise from Yamba on Sunday. I also had a fight with some green algae in Bob and Ree's pool but after masses of chemicals and 30 hours of running the filter it started to clear up - thank god for pool men. Remind me to never let my pool go green.
Sunday was a jazz cruise from Yamba and a bit of a drive around - back home early for tea.
Monday was back to Brissie and we met Ruth and Phil Church and their friend Dorothy and spent a pleasant evening in their apartment at the Aurora Tower.
Sadly when we got in the car to travel home Kermit has a dummy spit and refused to turn on his headlights - no amount of cajouling, pleading, fiddling, checking fuses etc would elicit even a tiny little beam - so we travelled home 'sans lumiere' - pretty awful on Narangba Road with no lights.
So Kermit is now happily ensconced, once again, at Narangba Autos having some attention. Ian the mechanic(my new best mate) has mentioned he knows of a nice muddy 4wd track for us to take Kermit to for an outing and so we are looking forward to that.
As Kermit is visiting the mechanics we dont have photos of his new tyres - yet!!!
September 11 Birthday againPat and Katie came up for a holiday and I organised for us to go to Tangalooma on Moreton Island. Joanne came too.
We set off from Scarborough on Friday 7th and the weather was bleak and miserable - this was the 4th day of rain and it was not letting up. However the weather forecast said it would get better.
Ploughing thru the rough seas on the Combie Trader was not pleasant. We had a taxi meet us at the barge landing point which proved to be a real bonus as we then had a very experienced local show is the roads to the resort - some of the creek crossings were quite hairy.
We arrived at the resort and found our villa - things were looking up!!! We just had to wait for the rain to stop. We were all pretty seedy from the trip on the barge and not real interested in much else than settling down a bit.
Saturday morning we arose to beautiful clear skies and sun beaming down on us so Jo and I set off to the jetty to meet Evan who had come over on the Tangalooma Flyer. The day was beautiful and the water was clean and clear. We booked to go Quad bike riding and chased up whale watching. However there was no whale watching available when we wanted it. Most of the paid activities were $58 each so quite reasonable.
The afternoon saw all 7 of us head off on Quad bikes for 1 hour tour - we had fun but the boys found it a bit tame as we had to follow single file and do what we were told.
Sunday was another glorious day and after Jo left we set off for Parasailing - Katie and I went up in a tandem and Ev and Carly had a single one each. It was amasing - John just went for a ride in the boat. It was a lovely hour on the water. Evan did some headstands which saw him dunked head first in the water (photos coming).
Pat and Katie headed home Sunday nite finding the place a bit tame for their liking but Evan, Carly John and I stayed till Monday and had a nice smooth trip home.
All up I can highly recommend Tangalooma Resort and have a contact for some good deals on the private villas. August 12 August comes and is goingEvan took Kermit to Bribie Island and nearly go stuck however it all worked out ok and he will think twice about going fishing at the northern end of Bribie Island on a weekday - he never saw another car and it was well and truly dark when Kermit refused to start. However all worked out well and he came home exhausted and tired.
Phil Brunskill, John's friend from school, came and stayed a weekend and paid us by cooking the most magnificent Indian meal - he's welcome to stay anytime. His cousin John also came for dinner and we had a nice night. Phil & I went to Redcliffe for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday - I took my bike on Sunday and found out that it was too packed to ride at Redcliffe as every other person in Brisbane was there also.
I went to Sydney to say goodbye to Cheryl and Ron who are going to live in Arabia - sounds much nicer than United Arab Emirates. Ron has a job there and Cheryl is taking some time before looking for one. Stopped at Deb Hongs for a night, then on to Cheryls at Gosford, which is really Mike and Bec Stalenbergs as Cheryl and Ron moved out 12 months or so ago when they went to Vanuatu to live. Went on to Sydney Airport on Friday to see Cheryl and Ron off and then met up with mum and went to the pictures at Broadway (old Grace Bros store) and saw "La Vie en Rose" - it was wonderful - even subtitled in French. Dropped in to visit Sue and Alan in St Clair on Saturday who drove me to the airport.
Back to Brissie on Saturday and on Sunday did a run to the Ekka with 100 or so barrels of fairy floss - even scored a bag for myself, Evan and Carly. Johns aunt Sis and her friend Julie were slaving away making floss and I sat amongst it all taking photos and getting covered in floss. Was good fun.
Back to work tomorrow. July 03 Trip to Fraser Part 2Our escape from Fraser Island proved to be uneventful - the dash along the beach was fine and the tide at Hook Point was favourable - the barge was there to pick us up and they welcomed us, remembering our worries about going over.
We took the car to the car wash and duly paid our tithe to clean the underneath of the car with a special $12 underbody car wash. The truck had a little hiccup and wouldnt start but as the RACQ was across the road that was quickly fixed. Old cars dont like having water in the distributor cap. We visited a fellow who makes a living rebuilding Jeeps and Toyotas and looked at doing some work on the springs for the car - he also builds bucket seats which have since become very appealing.
Our next stop was to be Calliope - just out of Rockhampton - it was said to be a pleasant place to stop overnight - a free camping area. It probably was pleasant but when we got there it was dark and raining and we had no idea where to set up - the people we set up next to had a fire going but it went out because of the rain. We got up early and got moving.
We had planned to travel to Mount Morgan and fill in the day before we arrived at Blackwater instead we went straight to Blackwater and spent a rainy afternoon in the laundromat doing washing and drying.
Ian & Caroline Hare invited us to stay the night and then we spent the rest of the time in a mine company house that had some room free. Bob & Ree Battin have their caravan parked in the backyard and we spent a few days there with them.
Ian arranged for us to visit the Curragh mines and we had a really good time doing so. The size of the machinery and especially the drag line was just amazing. The weather cleared up but stayed cold - we had a lovely time and were reluctant to leave on Saturday.
We headed off to Comet for a really good $8 breakfast and then to Roma. However a bulging, split heater hose spraying water over John's leg caused us to lose some time and we only got as far as Injune, a small town about 80k's from Roma. On the way we passed some drovers with cattle feeding in the "long paddock" (the grass verge by the edge of the road). At one stage John thought he might have to do a Croc Dundee and hypnotise a cow who stood in our way.
"Injune in June" is a yearly event and this year's was quite good. Some jokes, some songs, some bush poetry and dinner was a camp oven with beef stew, we missed the pumpkin soup, but had desert - damper and cocky's joy (Golden Syrup). You forget how good fresh bread, butter and golden syrup tastes. We met a lot of people who were travelling around and had a really good nite.
Next day it was up and at 'em. However Kermit decided he had had enough. We had lost the dash lights a couple of days before and now we had lost the blinkers - a quick call to the RACQ and all was fixed - however more work would be needed once at home.
We left Injune for Roma and decided we were too tired to set up the tent again and on a lovely moonlit night we continued on our way home to Narangba. We came home via Dalby, travelling north on the New England Highway to the D'aguilar Hwy and onto Blackbutt and Kilcoy. We were astounded by the number of roos on the side of the road that were in various stages of decay. John wondered if he could get a job disposing of the carcases. We must have passed several each kilometre. View Map |
